Case Study: Enhancing Student Experience Through Mobile-First Redesign for Pearson Institute

Introduction

Pearson Institute of Higher Education, formerly known as Midrand Graduate Institute (MGI), has been a pioneer in private higher education in Southern Africa since its establishment in 1989. Offering a range of accredited undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across six faculties, Pearson Institute is committed to providing quality education. As part of its commitment to innovation, every student enrolled in a first-year degree or Pre-degree Foundation program receives a tablet PC, enabling access to electronic textbooks and course materials.

The Brief

Our task was to redesign Pearson Institute’s website with a mobile-first approach, ensuring seamless accessibility and usability across all devices. The goal was to enhance the online experience for students, prospective students, and other stakeholders, providing intuitive navigation, engaging visuals, and easy access to relevant information about courses, admissions, and campus life.

Our Role

As the design team for this project, our role encompassed UX (User Experience) design, UI (User Interface) design, and art direction. We were responsible for creating a visually appealing and user-friendly website that effectively communicated Pearson Institute’s offerings and catered to the needs of its target audience.

Challenges

  1. Mobile Optimization: Ensuring that the website design prioritized mobile responsiveness to accommodate the increasing trend of mobile browsing among students and prospective students.
  2. Content Organization: Structuring the website content in a clear and intuitive manner to facilitate easy navigation and access to relevant information about courses, admissions, fees, and campus facilities.
  3. Visual Consistency: Maintaining visual consistency and brand identity across all pages and elements of the website to reinforce Pearson Institute’s brand image and credibility.
  4. Accessibility: Ensuring that the website design complied with accessibility standards to accommodate users with disabilities and provide an inclusive browsing experience for all visitors.

Approach and solutions

  1. Mobile-First Design: Adopted a mobile-first approach to website design, prioritizing the needs of mobile users and ensuring a seamless experience across devices of all sizes.
  2. Clear Navigation: Implemented a simplified navigation structure with clearly labeled menu items and intuitive navigation pathways, enabling users to find the information they need quickly and easily.
  3. Engaging Visuals: Incorporated high-quality visuals, including images, videos, and infographics, to enhance visual appeal and engage users with compelling visual storytelling about campus life, academic programs, and extracurricular activities.
  4. Interactive Features: Introduced interactive elements such as sliders, accordions, and collapsible sections to enable users to interact with content and explore different aspects of Pearson Institute’s offerings in an engaging and interactive manner.
  5. Accessibility Features: Integrated accessibility features such as alt text for images, keyboard navigation support, and color contrast enhancements to ensure that the website was accessible to users with disabilities and complied with accessibility standards.

Improvements

  1. Personalized Content: Implement machine learning algorithms to personalize website content based on user preferences, browsing history, and demographic information, providing a tailored experience for each visitor.
  2. Virtual Campus Tour: Develop a virtual campus tour feature allowing prospective students to explore campus facilities, classrooms, and amenities from the comfort of their own homes, providing a realistic preview of campus life.
  3. Student Portal Integration: Integrate a student portal within the website, enabling enrolled students to access academic resources, submit assignments, view grades, and communicate with faculty and peers through a centralized platform.
  4. Live Chat Support: Incorporate live chat support functionality to provide real-time assistance and support to website visitors, answering queries about admissions, course offerings, and other inquiries promptly and efficiently.
  5. Alumni Success Stories: Showcase success stories and testimonials from alumni highlighting their achievements and career paths after graduating from Pearson Institute, inspiring prospective students and reinforcing the value of a Pearson education.
