Introduction
“My Shack” narrates Lynn’s poignant journey growing up in Athlone on the Cape Flats in Cape Town, amidst the challenges of poverty, violence, and trauma. Through Lynn’s eyes, readers are immersed in the harsh realities of life on the Cape Flats, confronting issues of sexual assault, alcoholism, and lack of education. Despite the hardships, Lynn’s story is a testament to resilience and the human spirit’s capacity for healing and hope.

Our brief:
Our task was to develop the identity for “My Shack,” including designing the book cover, creating social media assets, posters for events, website development, and designing merchandise. Additionally, we were responsible for managing social media accounts, organising the book launch event, handling media publications, and designing HTML emailers.
Our role
As the creative team behind “My Shack,” our role encompassed art direction, design of various collateral including the book cover, pull-up banners, invitations, and business cards. We also managed social media accounts, orchestrated the book launch event, facilitated media relations, and conceptualized activations to raise brand awareness.
Challenges
- Sensitive Subject Matter: Designing visuals and promotional materials that respect the sensitive themes of the book while still capturing the attention of the audience.
- Diverse Audience: Reaching a diverse audience, including those who can relate to Lynn’s experiences and those who may be learning about the realities of life on the Cape Flats for the first time.
- Brand Consistency: Maintaining consistency across various touchpoints, including the book cover, website, social media, and merchandise, to ensure a cohesive brand identity.
- Emotional Impact: Creating visuals and experiences that evoke the emotions conveyed in Lynn’s narrative without sensationalizing or trivializing her experiences.

- Event Planning: Orchestrated a memorable book launch event that honored Lynn’s journey and provided a platform for dialogue and reflection. Utilized multimedia presentations, guest speakers, and interactive experiences to engage attendees and amplify the book’s message.
- Merchandise Design: Created merchandise items such as t-shirts, mugs, and tote bags featuring quotes and imagery from the book, allowing readers to carry a piece of Lynn’s story with them and spark conversations in their communities.
